What's the difference between this and an ordinary laser?

Most dental practices that advertise "laser" use a diode laser — a soft-tissue-only laser. The Biolase Waterlase iPlus is an Er,Cr:YSGG (Erbium Chromium) laser that works on:

Hard tissue: bone, dentin, enamel — can cut and prepare teeth for fillings without a drill

Canal disinfection: in root canal treatment, to kill bacteria remaining after mechanical cleaning
