The 30-second summary
Digital Smile Design (DSD) is a treatment-planning method that uses 3D imaging, facial scanning, and dedicated design software to plan your new smile before a dentist touches a single tooth. At AQUA Dent Clinics you see a 3D simulation of your future smile on a large screen, then try a “mock-up” in your mouth during the same first session — and only if you love it does treatment begin. Pricing in Jeddah for 2026 at AQUA: porcelain veneers SAR 3,000–4,200 per tooth, full smile makeover with 8 veneers SAR 24,000–33,600. Not every smile needs DSD: simple orthodontics or one whitening session is sometimes enough — and saves you a lot of money. For live updated pricing, use the AQUA cost calculator.
What exactly is Digital Smile Design?
Ten years ago, a cosmetic dentist worked from a verbal description (“I want a natural smile, white but not too white, teeth not too long”), then made the veneers and hoped the patient liked the result. Surprises were common — and many were unwelcome.
DSD solves this with three technical steps:
- Full-mouth 3D scan: AQUA uses TRIOS or iTero scanners that produce a precise 3D map of every tooth, gum line, and the relationship between upper and lower jaws.
- Facial photography from multiple angles: Calibrated photos, a short video of your lip movement during speech and smiling, and sometimes a complete 3D facial scan.
- Digital design on software: The dentist designs the new shape of every tooth on a computer, then shows you the simulation before any preparation — you see your face with the new smile before any cutting.
Most importantly: we 3D-print a temporary model (called a “mock-up”) in special resin that bonds to your existing teeth without preparation. You leave the clinic with your temporary new smile and live with it for two days to a week. You eat, talk, take selfies, ask your spouse or friends. Only if you decide the look is exactly right do we begin the final phase.
How DSD differs from traditional veneers at AQUA
| Stage | Traditional veneers | DSD at AQUA |
|---|---|---|
| First consultation | 15-20 min, verbal discussion + 2D photos | 60-90 min, full 3D scan + smile analysis + instant simulation |
| Approval of the look | You see the result after preparation (too late to adjust) | You see the digital result and try it physically before any preparation |
| Preparation (drilling) | Sometimes more than necessary because the design wasn’t precisely calculated | Digitally calculated — sometimes just 0.3 mm or even no-prep veneers |
| Final adjustment sessions | May need 3-5 sessions | Usually 1-2 sessions because the design is pre-planned |
| Risk on the final look | You see the shape after it’s done | You approve the shape before it begins |
When DSD is worth the extra cost
I’m Dr. Jamil Aref, and I’m probably the most likely person to tell patients they don’t need DSD. The reason: the additional planning cost isn’t justified in every case. Here are the five situations where DSD is worth it:
1. Comprehensive cosmetic treatment (8+ veneers)
If you’re placing 8-10 veneers across upper and lower front teeth, small differences in length, tilt, or color between adjacent teeth become very visible in photos and video. DSD ensures complete consistency and lets you see the result before we cut anything.
2. Facial asymmetry or smile-line issues
If you have mild gummy smile, or your smile line is tilted because of tooth-length differences or gum prominence, digital imaging measures these differences in millimeters and designs adjustments that make the face look symmetrical. Compare with our cosmetic dentistry service page to see if your case needs DSD or responds to a simpler procedure.
3. Full-mouth rehabilitation cases
If you have broken teeth, old crowns, missing teeth requiring implants, and previous suboptimal orthodontics — DSD ties all these pieces into one plan instead of disconnected treatments that don’t harmonize. These cases are major investments, and DSD protects that investment from a costly planning error.
4. Patients with very specific outcome visions
If you tell me “I want a smile like a particular celebrity” or “I want a softer, more feminine look — not sharp” — DSD converts those subjective descriptions into precise numbers. We measure the celebrity’s smile, compare it against your facial dimensions, and design a version that suits you — not a copy of someone else.
5. Patients from outside Jeddah or Saudi Arabia
If you’re traveling from Riyadh, Dammam, or Abu Dhabi to Jeddah for veneers — DSD reduces the number of trips. Digital planning + mock-up session can be completed in two days; you return for a week to install the final veneers. Without DSD, you might need 4-5 round trips.
When you don’t need DSD — and save money
Four cases where DSD adds no value, and any dentist who recommends it to you is selling a service you won’t see a difference from:
- Whitening only: If your teeth are well-shaped but yellow, AQUA’s professional whitening package (SAR 1,700–1,990) is enough.
- Simple orthodontics for mild front-teeth crowding: Invisalign Express for simple cases (SAR 22,000–25,000) is cheaper and preserves natural teeth instead of grinding them down for veneers.
- One broken tooth: This is a single veneer or composite bonding case (SAR 1,000–4,200 per tooth). DSD isn’t justified for one tooth.
- Patients under 25 with naturally good teeth: Veneers are a long-term decision. I don’t recommend them for young people with healthy teeth just for “Hollywood smile” desire. At AQUA we usually recommend whitening + light contouring (gentle edge sculpting) first.

The technology we use for DSD at AQUA
- TRIOS 5 3D scanner: 6-micron precision, full-mouth map in 3 minutes
- CBCT panoramic 3D imaging from Planmeca ProMax: Reveals bone and root anatomy, important for No-prep vs. traditional veneer decisions. Learn more about our advanced imaging equipment at AQUA.
- Digital Smile Design (DSD App) Italian software + Exocad: Industry-standard digital design platforms
- 3D printer for mock-ups: Formlabs Form 3B Dental — prints the simulation model in 90 minutes
- Partner labs in Italy or Germany: For final veneer fabrication, or a certified Saudi lab for fast cases
The patient journey in DSD — actual timeline
- Day 1 — 90-minute session: Consultation, 3D scan, facial photography, taste and expectations discussion
- Day 4-7 — 60-minute session: Show digital simulation + try mock-up in your mouth (you leave with a new temporary smile)
- Day 8-14 — your normal life: Live with the mock-up, eat, take photos, consult those you trust
- Day 14-15 — approval + preparation session: If the smile pleases you as is, we begin the actual preparation and take final impressions
- Day 16-25 — waiting for veneers from the lab: 7-14 days typically; you wear beautiful temporary veneers in the meantime
- Day 26-27 — final installation session: 90-120 minutes; you leave with your permanent smile
- Day 30 — follow-up: Gum check + bite alignment, small adjustments if needed
Total: about 4 weeks from start to finish. For fast-track cases (out-of-town patients), the timeline can compress to 7-10 days using a fast lab.
Risks and limitations — what others don’t tell you
- Veneers are irreversible: Once a tooth is prepared (even 0.3 mm), the natural enamel can’t be restored. You’ll need another veneer in 10-15 years when the first is damaged.
- Sensitivity after installation: 15-25% of patients notice cold sensitivity for 2-6 weeks, then it fades. Rare cases persist longer.
- Not all DSD is executed with craftsmanship: Digital design is excellent, but if the lab or dentist can’t execute the design precisely, the result won’t match the simulation. Ask to see previous cases after 6 months of wear, not just fresh before/afters.
- Doesn’t fix gum issues: If your gums are inflamed or receding, gum treatment must come first. Read about periodontal treatment at AQUA.
- Doesn’t fix bite issues: If you grind your teeth (Bruxism), veneers will crack within years. You need bite therapy + nightguard before or alongside veneers.
Frequently asked questions
Is DSD painful?
Digital planning + mock-up: completely painless, no anesthesia, no drilling. Final preparation phase: we use local anesthesia, you only feel light pressure. After installation: mild sensitivity for 1-2 weeks.
Can veneers be removed later?
Technically yes, but the tooth doesn’t return to its original shape exactly (the prepared enamel doesn’t grow back). If you’re uncertain about long-term commitment, consider No-prep veneers, which require minimal preparation (0.3 mm or less) and can sometimes be installed without any drilling.
Does DSD work for lower teeth too?
Yes. Lower teeth show in a full smile in 60% of people. Many DSD cases include the front lower six teeth at minimum for overall harmony.
How many veneers do I actually need?
It depends on your smile width. A wide smile shows 10-12 teeth — you’ll need 8-10 veneers to cover what shows. A narrower smile shows 6-8 teeth — you may need only 6 veneers. We’ll tell you the right number after the first DSD session.
Is DSD covered by insurance?
Usually not, because it’s a cosmetic procedure. Saudi insurance plans typically cover 0% of veneers for healthy teeth (purely cosmetic). We prepare the medical report and photos for your own submission in cases with documented functional necessity. See our full insurance policy here.
How long do veneers last?
E.max veneers: 10-15 years with good care. Zirconia veneers: 12-20 years. Influencing factors: eating habits, teeth grinding, oral hygiene. Patients who keep semi-annual checkups + nightguard if needed reach 18-20 years without replacement.
What’s the difference between DSD and “Hollywood Smile” packages?
DSD is a structured digital planning method. “Hollywood Smile” is a marketing term that just describes the look of bright white veneers. You can produce a “Hollywood Smile” without DSD (potentially inconsistent result) or with DSD (calculated result). At AQUA, we usually don’t recommend traditional “Hollywood smile” because it looks artificial. We recommend DSD that respects your face’s natural proportions.
Next step — book a DSD consultation
If you’re considering veneers or smile redesign, I recommend booking a no-commitment consultation first. In 60-90 minutes we’ll do the following:
- Comprehensive examination + honest opinion on whether you actually need DSD
- Suggested cheaper alternatives if applicable (whitening, clear aligners, cosmetic bonding)
- Simple simulation of your potential smile
- Precise pricing for your specific case (not generic estimates)
