A question I hear in nearly every orthodontic consultation: “Which is better — Invisalign or metal braces?” The honest answer in most cases: both get you to the same result — but the journey is different.

1. Case complexity
Mild to moderate cases — light crowding, gaps, or limited cosmetic concerns — can be treated equally well with Invisalign or metal braces. Complex cases (severe deep bite, large open bite, planned extractions, jaw surgery) remain more reliably handled with traditional braces.
Recent literature shows Invisalign has advanced considerably over the last decade and can manage roughly 85% of adult cases — but the remaining 15%, including surgical cases and highly complex orthodontic problems, still call for fixed braces.
2. Personal commitment
Invisalign requires wearing the aligners 20–22 hours a day. Anything less slows the treatment down or sets it back to square one.
- A teenager who struggles with consistency — metal braces are more dependable.
- Someone who wants the peace of mind of “put it on and forget it” — metal braces.
- Someone who hates the idea of seeing anything on their teeth in photos — Invisalign.
3. Time available for appointments
Invisalign needs visits every 8–10 weeks (some of which are virtual via the Invisalign Virtual Care app). Metal braces require visits every 4–6 weeks for wire adjustments. If you travel often or live outside Jeddah, Invisalign is clearly more flexible.
4. Cost
Invisalign is typically 15–25% more expensive than metal braces in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf. The clinical efficacy difference does not justify the price difference on its own — you are paying more for the patient experience, not for a better result.
About 60% of my adult patients choose Invisalign, and parents of about 90% of teenagers prefer metal braces. Both decisions are right. — Dr. Mohamed Bamashmous
Bottom line
Invisalign is excellent for most adults. Metal braces are more dependable for complex cases and teenagers. The difference in the final result is small — the difference in the journey is significant. Choose the option that fits your personality, your commitment, and your budget, and trust that both paths will get you to a beautifully straight smile.
